Posted by onlydarksets on February 7, 2008

There are lots of programs to let you write to PDF, but until now I hadn’t seen one that will save a PDF as a Word document.

Bye-bye Vista…

Posted by onlydarksets on January 8, 2008

I got tired of waiting (and waiting…and waiting…and waiting) for Vista to respond to simple commands like “delete this file” on the desktop at home, so I downgraded it to XP today.

It’s nice to see stuff just “work” again.

Atheros AR5006x drivers

Posted by onlydarksets on January 7, 2008

My HP a1357c came with a wireless card, that I relocated to another PC, which was running Vista. Vista immediately identified the card and installed the drivers.

For reasons that will soon become clear (in another post), I needed the XP drivers for this card. Go ahead and Google it – you won’t find them.

Well, I finally tracked down legit drivers. In case the link doesn’t work, the filename is sp26807.exe.

UPDATE: The KB fix mentioned below is only for WPA2.  I had to reinstall XP (again), and this time I checked – WPA is definitely there by default!
After installing this, I didn’t see an option for WPA – only WEP. I installed this KB fix, but, upon rebooting, I may have been looking in the wrong place. So, who knows what you really need installed. If WPA doesn’t show up, then give it a try.

Getting SDHC to work

Posted by onlydarksets on December 26, 2007

UPDATE: Now it’s clear that the card is bad.  Off to BB (again!).

UPDATE: Looks like it’s the card reader, too. Ugh – off to BB in the morning.

I got a 4GB microSDHC card for my i760 for Christmas, and getting it working has been a bit of a pain. First, you need a hacked driver to get it working on the i760. However, you also need a hotfix to get it working in Windows XP! To make it worse, MS won’t just “give” you the hotfix – you have to request it. However, there is an alternative! See below…
