So apparently it’s not that simple to get out from under the thumb of

I want to use a custom domain name and my own hosting instead of, but I would like to retain my Google/Yahoo/Live search rankings. I had hoped throwing a little cash at it would do the trick, but apparently all that gets you is 302 redirects, which are “temporary” redirects.  In common parlance, that tells the browser how to get to the page, but it does not tell the search engine spiders to update your URLs.  So, Google will continue to think that contains all of my existing posts. suggests simply paying them $10/year for life to redirect the old links to my new site.  After thinking a little more about why I was doing this, I’m thinking $10/year ain’t a bad proposition.

The good news is that, from this point on, the search engines will use for new posts.

Gmail likes its contacts more than yours

Posted by onlydarksets on December 8, 2008

I’ve been running into a problem where Gmail stops auto-suggesting contacts in my Contacts list.  Turns out, it’s because it likes its own “Suggested Contacts” better.  More to the point, the “Suggested Contacts” are case-sensitive, while the auto-suggest is not, and the auto-suggest pukes on what it perceives to be duplicates.

So, if you have a contact in your Contacts list with the email address “”, and they send you an email configured as “”, and you respond to that email, gmail adds the duplicate address to your “Suggested Contacts” list.  Then, the next time you try to send them a new email, gmail chokes on the duplicate, and you get nothing.

UPDATE: Looks like Google is working on it.

Firefox Tip: Copying history to a new tab

Posted by onlydarksets on July 9, 2008

I’m trying to limit the non-original content, but this was too good to pass up.

When you want to backtrack a few paces in your web surfing clicktrail but not lose the page you’re on, in Firefox 3, click on your current tab, hold down the Ctrl key and drag it. This will duplicate the tab and keep its history in the copy—that way you can back out and stay where you are in another tab. Sadly this trick only works in Firefox for Windows, not on the Mac.

Windows Live Writer supports WordPress!

Posted by onlydarksets on November 14, 2007

This was hardly a secret or anything, given WordPress’s immense popularity, but I just found out that WLW supports it, as proved by this post!

Of course, a link is always helpful!

Server-side email rules using exim filters

Posted by onlydarksets on March 1, 2007

After being “spoiled” by OWA server-side rules that automatically move incoming email into certain folders, I found a solution for our IMAP/POP3 based email server at You can build a filter file that contains rules to process and save the mail in certain folders. It’s not very intuitive, but it should work!
