Finding the MAC on the i760 (redux)

Posted by onlydarksets on July 22, 2008

I had previously posted how to find the MAC address on the i760 running WM6.  With the official release of WM 6.1, the code has changed.  You now need to enter #43574357*.

iPhone activation relies on Windows Mobile

Posted by onlydarksets on July 20, 2008

Imagine my surprise yesterday, when the Apple employee who was hooking up my iPhone pulled out a handheld device running Windows Mobile!  There was a full-screen application (looked like something in Java), but I saw the distinctive WM keyboard select icon (in the system tray area) and the craptacular WM QWERTY keyboard (funny nonsequitor – I actually had to think for a second how to spell QWERTY):

I am pretty sure the device was the Symbol MC70 (or a predecessor to it):

I’m surprised I couldn’t find anything on this on the interwebs.  I’d have guessed this would be a hot-topic.
Still not “hot”, but it’s out there. Thanks, Pony99CA.

Getting the iPhone 3G (Part 3)

Posted by onlydarksets on July 20, 2008

At 7:15a, the first Apple employee came out.  There were only about 10 of us, so he didn’t have to count the line down.  Instead, he was asking whether we were porting, upgrading an existing line, or creating a new account.  He then offered to “pre-screen” people to ensure everything went smoothly and so they didn’t have to wait in line if their account, for example, had a FAN discount associated with it.

+1 for showing initiative.

Surprisingly, everyone was porting, so there was nothing to check.  He went back in, but came out about 5 minutes later (7:25a), and said they would starting processing us 2 hours early!  So, my anticipated 5 hour ordeal was almost cut in half.

+1 again.

Why didn’t Apple include the dock?

Posted by onlydarksets on July 20, 2008

By all accounts, Apple is actually receiving more money per iPhone with 3G versus 2G and is paying “significantly less” to produce each 3G handset.

So…why are they giving the consumer less?  The 2G iPhone came with a dock.  For the 3G, that will be an extra $29, thank you very much.

I’ve been otherwise impressed with the Apple experience, but it seems like a pretty cheap move to me.

Inserting pauses into phone numbers

Posted by onlydarksets on July 19, 2008

If you put a comma in a phone number, it acts as a pause.  This is handy for things like entering voicemail codes, etc., as the pause starts once the call connects.

However, Grumpy has uncovered an apparent bug in this feature.  The gist is that, the dialer only properly interprets the pause command if you dial the number through the phone app.  If you dial the number by going directly to the contacts, it doesn’t work.

Getting the iPhone 3G (Part 2)

Posted by onlydarksets on July 19, 2008

At 9:01p on Friday, I checked the Apple iPhone Availability Site.  It showed only two stores in Northern Virginia (out of 4) would have the iPhone: one would have only the 16GB White (the least popular model), while the other would have all three in stock.

Despite it’s unpopularity, I wanted the White model in order to reduce fingerprints and scratches showing up on the back, so I figured my best chance would be to go to the store with only the White in stock.  There would be fewer people trying to get the other models, and, thus, fewer people “settling” for the White (and reducing my odds).  Since this was my one and only shot to get the phone, I showed up at 4:45a.  Imagine my surprise when there was already one gentleman in front of me.

We talked for a bit, and it turns out he got there at 3:30a.  He soon reveals, though, that he actually got his iPhone yesterday (got in line at 5:00a), but that he was here today to try to make some money by “line squatting” and then selling his spot to someone at the back of the line for around $100.  I figured they had to have at least 3 phones in there (all White), so I wasn’t too worried about myself.  This gentleman, however, was another story.

While I admire his entrepreneurial spirit, I have no idea why he chose to go to the location that not only had fewer models, but, as I mentioned, had only the least popular model in stock.  What on earth made him think this store would have a longer line than the other store (just 7 miles away)?  Unfortunately, the market crushed this individual.

By 6:00a, we were still the only ones there.  At 6:25a, four more people showed up.  At 6:45a, another person showed up.  At 7:15a, when the Apple dudes came out to brief us on the status, there were a grand total of about 10 people in line.

Dejected, tired, and not $100 richer for the effort, our friend packed up his chair and went home.

Moral of the story: If you are going to try to exploit the market, do a little research first.

Sidenote: The store actually had two Black 16GB phones left.  I got one of them (so much for my fingerprint theory!).

Got it!

Posted by onlydarksets on July 19, 2008

somehow, I was able to get the iPhone and stay true to my aversion to wasting my family time. I got in line at 4:45a, and I was done at 7:45a. My kids got up around 7a, and my wife brought them to the mall. All told , I spent 3 hours, but most was while everyone was asleep. In my twisted world, that’s a win!

More details later. Posting from my new 16gb black iPhone!

I’m a hypocrite (but kudos to Apple)

Posted by onlydarksets on July 18, 2008

But not a very successful one.

I went online last night and found out the Apple store in Tysons Corner, VA would have black and white 16GB iPhones in stock on Friday.  I went down there and was in line at 6:30a, about #35 or so.  I know, I said I wouldn’t do it, but I did.  Such is me.

Within 60 seconds, an Apple employee came out of the store and started counting the line.  Stopping about 10 people in front of me, he cut off the line.  He said the rest of us could wait, but it wasn’t likely we would get one.

So, props to Apple for having someone at the store and for helping their potential customers not waste too much time.  For me, I wasted about 45 minutes in travel time (including parking and walking through a deserted mall) and 1 minute of wait time.  More than I would have liked, but not nearly as much as it could have been.

We’ll see how tomorrow goes…
