Hard reset for the Zune

IF YOUR ZUNE 30GB FROZE ON DECEMBER 31, 2008, read this post. The information in the comments is all pretty much the same – everyone’s froze at 12:00a PST. Apparently this is a Leap Year issue that will resolve itself on 1/1/2009. Of course, a firmware patch will be required for those few Zunes that live 6 years, but hopefully everyone’s Zunes work in the New Year.
Here is the original post:
WARNING: A hard reset will delete everything on your Zune.
- Press and hold the back button
- Press and hold up until it reboots
- Depending on which Zune you have, immediately do one of the following:
- If you have a Zune 4 GB, Zune 8BG, or Zune 80GB, immediately press and hold the Back button Back at the same time as you press the right side of the Zune pad and the Play/Pause button. Continue to hold these buttons until the Zune device restarts and you receive the following message: “Clearing contents. Please wait.”
- If you have a Zune 30GB, immediately press and hold the Back button Back at the same time that you press the right side of the Zune pad and the center of the Zune pad. Continue to hold these buttons until the Zune device restarts and you receive the following message: “Clearing contents. Please wait.”

There are a few packages out there that claim to be able to restore your data:

Those were Zune 1 instructions. I updated with Zune 2 instructions. If you have a 4gb/8gb/80gb Zune, give it another try.

Well my zune is frozen and i had to wait until the battery died because it would always freeze on my screen lock. then i finally managed to unlock it but it froze right at the main menu. so when i try to reset it nothinghappens its still frozen any1 having the same issue and found a solution??? plz reply or help me!!!

Just skip to step 3. You don’t need to reset if it’s already off because the battery died. When you plug it in, just be ready to hold down the buttons.

If you Zune is frozen, for instance you tried to play music and it just stopped and the screen stuck there, just hold the back button and then hold the up area on the zune pad. This will power off the zune, just let go of the buttons and see if your zune will start. If so, there is no need to clear the zune.

I just got a zune yesterday and I was playing some music and all of a sudden I went to a different song and it just froze and I’ve tried reseting it and I’m currently waiting for the battery to die, but I don’t think its even on because the music menu is faded.

Well, I tried hard resetting my zune but its just stuck on the loading screen with the logo and the white bar.
The white bar is filled all the way but its just frozen, and I’ve already tried everything!

Yeah, I woke up at like 6 this morning and realized that mine had froze up some time in the night, is this like an epidemic or something? I’m going to probably take it to BestBuy and see if they can do anything 😦

My zune is frozen at the start up screen and I don’t know what to do. I tried resetting by pressing the back button and up at the same time and nothing happened. My batteries were dead, so I plugged it in to the usb on my laptop and it was on the charging picture for a while then it went to the boot up screen and been stuck there ever since. What do I do?

Ever since I updated to the 3.0 firmware, my zune has been freezing up every time I change the music or move too quickly. Is there anyway to fix that problem?

After cruising around the net, it seems that every 30GB Zune in the WORLD has just stopped working for some random reason… idk, maybe it’s a sign of the apocalypse, next it’ll be our cell phones, then T.V.s, then…?

I live in the UK and today my 30Gb Zune has the same locked problem as the others above i.e. stuck on the Zune Logo and not responding to any of the button combinations to reset it. I installed the latest Microsoft updates just 2 weeks ago and it appeared to be working fine. Now waiting for the battery to run out to see if that makes a difference. . . .

I have the same problem (netherlands): zune is freezed with the logo and a white baron the screen. Resetten does nog work. My zune seems to be dead (30GB). It looks like a millenium bug (so many experience the same)?

To elaborate: I was listening to my Zune at work, and at midnight PST it turned off. I thought the battery was dead, and plugged it in when I got home. It reacted as everyone else’s has. Showed a charge screen for a little, then frozen at the loading screen. With the backlight on. Awesome for the future of my battery life if this is just a temporary problem. If this is permanent, my Zune will make an awesome projectile. Way to fail yet again, Microsoft. *facepalm*

OMG what is going on?? I’m in Ireland and my Zune 30GB is just frozen this morning- white bar is fully loaded with zune logo but it won’t respod to anything. Its battery went flat so I plugged it in but then it just did the same thing again with white loading bar and zune logo. Seriously, why every zune in the world??

Next pop the cover off and locate the battery plug at the top left corner of the zune, using your screw driver, pop the cable connection half way off, and do this to the other plug on the right side. Wait 3 seconds, then push down the right connector and then the left battery connecter. Your zune should start up immediately. Press the backing of the zune down (make sure headphone jack is aligned) and put the screws and cover back in place.

Worked for me, but as soon as I plugged it in to sync it locked back up.

Too creepy. Mine is doing the same exact thing. Zune logo with white bar at the bottom. Reset is not working, plugging in, unplugging, hold, unhold, etc, etc…. Nothing is working. It’s just frozen. Lovely.

Thanks, Kevin – I updated the other post. Hopefully a real (and non-invasive) sync is coming soon.
Also, I confirmed that my Zune 2 works fine, so this appears to be limited to the 30GB Zunes.

Mine too. Original zune 30 with all the latest updates. As soon as I turned it on this morning it froze at the zune boot up screen about 90% through.

Plugged mine in at about 3 am last night in Texas and I remember noticing that it didn’t register the usb cable. I thought nothing of it before going to bed. Hard to believe all the 30 gb would brick at the exact same time. Here’s hoping it’s the zune equivalent of the three red lights (meaning Microsoft replaces and pays for everything).

My 30g Zune is FROZEN. This morning I plug it into my computer, because i wanted to sync some music. Well it started up as normal, Than Stop..Frozen w/ the Zune logo and a white bar at the bottom. Seem to be completely full, Not responding! I tried to reboot it using the back and up method nothing seems to be working. I’ve had it for about a year and never had a problem with it until today. and all I succeeded in doing was cracking the case…couldn’t even get the outside cover off…

Well i’m right there with everybody else as far as the frozen on loading screen issue with my 30 GB zune, this one from San Diego. Let’s hope microsoft steps up to the plate and either fixes it or gives us a really good deal on a new one. It would suck to just have to throw it away and save up for the price of a new one.

yup! Same problem over here? Have a refurbished Zune, thought that was the problem! Glad to see it’s not, let’s just hope MS fixes the problem! Just realised I won’t be able to erase or update my Zune, cause it doesn’t connect with the computer.. My battery is almost dead, so I waited till it died, then plugged it into my computer.. I did get the battery logo with the exclamationpoint in it, but as soon as the battery is loaded enough, I get the startup screen with the logo and the white bar.. Stuck again.. Let the battery go dead 3 times already but keep getting the same thing.. So no luck there either 😦

Do the procedure for removing the cover and disconecting the battery for a few seconds. It worked for me…nothing was lost…worked like a charm!

Tried battery disconnect and hard reset, nothing works. The first time I disconnected the battery it did reboot, as soon as I plugged it into the laptop it crashed again. All other reset attempts have failed.

It’s an easy process but if you’re unsure don’t attempt it if you think you’ll screw it or something. :)”

Just opened the lower part of my device (right at the connector) and removed the battery cable like advised. Popped it back in and, there you go. Works like a charm.

To add my two cents … ME TOO! My wife and I both have zune 30mg … and were both listening to music at about midnight when both, almost like a script, stopped playing the music, returned to the zune logo screen with solid white bar, and froze. Both batteries died in about 2 hours … recharged one over the rest of the night, but all I got was the same frozen screen. So, add “Sleepless in Seattle” (ha the sequel) to this list.

Hello. I just got my Zune a couple of months ago from my best friend and last night i had turned it off for about an hour and then went to turn in back on, and my zune logo came up and so did the progress bar but nothing worked by the way i have the 1809 model. What do i do?

My zune is frozen as well. I just figured it was all my porn messing it up, (JK). Tried the hard rest, nothing, tried letting it sit until the battery was dead, that didn’t work, and here in my office I have no tools to open the darn thing…except a hammer, and I am guessing that will not help.
It *DOES* seem really odd that so many people are having problems on this date. Look how many people have posted here, statisticly, we are a FRACTION of the population…I wonder if it is literally ALL 30g zunes. My wife has an 8g, and it’s fine.
Really irritating to say the least, I listen to mine LITERALLY all day.

OK, well the battery trick does not work at all. If you unplug the battery, it will boot up fine the first time. I was able to even listen to a song until I plugged it in my computer. From there, it went back to the freeze-up mode. The 2nd time I tried the battery trick, it didn’t start up normally at all and got stuck just before the main menu.

I think that Microsoft did this to the Zunes because over half of the people on this page had problems with their zunes freezing up and my dad and i both have zunes and we went to put more music on them yesterday, and guess what. They both froze! So i don’t know whats up!

WOW!!!!! This is sooooooooo CRAZY!!!! Im in atlanta ga and my 30gb has stopped working, its stuck on the loading screen. I tried to reset and hard reset and nothing.. whats going on? Well guys, surprisingly so, it seems all 30 GB Zune’s have indeed stopped working. All those posted here are from different parts of the world(me being from India).
I’ll try the combination – back button and Up on D-Pad. May god have grace on all owners of 30Gig Zune.

Has anyone tried draining the battery, setting their system clock ahead to 1/1/2009, and then syncing? If it’s the date 12/31/2008 that is the problem, maybe this will be fixed tomorrow? Of course, if it’s that simple, I would expect MS to just say so…

—Yeah If their response to this is as quick as the Windows XP Serivce Pack 3 incident, we can expect anther 2 weeks for a fix. Sad thing is I just gave this to my 3 year old daughter last night so she can watch her cartoons on it. It broke her heart when it didn’t work this morning, she thought she broke it.

I tried calling them earlier to try and talk with someone. Mine finally died as I could not find a screwdriver to remove the cover. So I plugged it into the wall to recharge it and the stupid thing locked up again. Not happy at all about this. I guess I will have to try and find a screw driver to hard reset the stupid thing and hope for the best.

I have some information from the Zune team at MS:
“The technical team jumped on the problem immediately and isolated the issue: a bug in the internal clock driver related to the way the device handles a leap year. That being the case, the issue should be resolved over the next 24 hours as the time change moves to January 1, 2009. We expect the internal clock on the Zune 30GB devices will automatically reset tomorrow (noon, GMT). By tomorrow you should allow the battery to fully run out of power before the unit can restart successfully then simply ensure that your device is recharged, then turn it back on. If you’re a Zune Pass subscriber, you may need to sync your device with your PC to refresh the rights to the subscription content you have downloaded to your device. :

Confirming that the “hard reset” steps worked on two 30GB Zunes here. Didn’t lose any data off either one, but be careful when you’re unplugging the battery that you don’t pull the power connector off. Did that on my second one, and had to manually put it all back together. 😉

Early this morning we were alerted by our customers that there was a widespread issue affecting our 2006 model Zune 30GB devices (a large number of which are still actively being used). The technical team jumped on the problem immediately and isolated the issue: a bug in the internal clock driver related to the way the device handles a leap year. The issue should be resolved over the next 24 hours as the time change moves to January 1, 2009. We expect the internal clock on the Zune 30GB devices will automatically reset tomorrow (noon, GMT). By tomorrow you should allow the battery to fully run out of power before the unit can restart successfully then simply ensure that your device is recharged, then turn it back on. If you’re a Zune Pass subscriber, you may need to sync your device with your PC to refresh the rights to the subscription content you have downloaded to your device.
Customers can continue to stay informed via the support page on zune.net (zune.net/support).
We know this has been a big inconvenience to our customers and we are sorry for that, and want to thank them for their patience.

My Zune 30 is frozen on the boot screen, now what do I do?
You will need to reboot your device after noon GMT on Jan 1, 2009.
Please unplug your Zune (no AC or USB cables).
Because your Zune is frozen your device battery will begin draining, this is good.
The battery will eventually be fully depleted and the screen will go black.
After noon GMT on January 1 (that’s 7 a.m. Eastern or 4 a.m. Pacific time) connect your AC power or USB cable such that the battery can begin charging again.
Once the Zune has enough battery to boot it should do so normally and you can go back to enjoying your Zune!
My Zune 30 has been working fine today, should I be worried?
Nope, your device is fine and will continue to work as long as you do not plug it into the PC before tomorrow.
If you plug your device into a PC before noon GMT Jan 1, 2009 your device clock will be set to the last day of the leap year and you will experience the freeze issue. If this happens, see above.
The PC that you plug into does not have to have the Zune software installed in order for your device clock to be set and the leap year bug to occur so you should avoid plugging your Zune 30 into any PC today.
What if I have DRM content on my Zune?
Your DRM content will most likely not be affected by this issue. However, it is a good idea to sync your device with your PC once the freeze has been resolved in order to ensure that all of your licenses are up to date.
What if I took the advice on the forums and hard reset my device by disconnecting the battery?
This is not a good idea and we do not recommend opening your device up yourself. However, if you already did it…
If you have DRM content on your device, your DRM store is now out of sync with your secure clock.
You will need to wait 24 hours from the time that you reset the device and then resync your DRM licenses from your PC.
Alternatively you can format your device and resync the content.

My 30G is doing the same in Dallas TX. Worked great yesterday at the office. Brought home to charge and is locked on the logo screen.

This is unbelievable. Its Zunefantastic. My 30 gig original Zune locked up just like ever one else here on Dec 31st 2008. I have tried a soft reset with the back key and the up arrow to no avail. Next I let the battery run down and connected to the computer. After the battery charged the Zune program does not recognize the device.
This is really weird! Microsoft you got some explaining to do!
I want my Zune back or I will go to the dark side.

I find it funny the answer about when they will fix this is it will fix itself. Yes, but in 4 years when leap year happens again? I am just going to have to have another day were this all happens again? Yes I guess most of the 2006 zunes will not be still working in 2012 but if it still is… Microsoft and it’s well why fix it, it will only happen to old hardware that we do not want you to be using in 4 more years… well you are right I may not be using it 4 more years, because I am tired of dealing with it.

Well, I did what Microsoft said and it works. It’s now just after noon GMT here in the UK and all appears well. After a short charge my Zune has booted up properly and is now synchronised with my PC. Roll on the next leap year. I wonder if Microsoft will apologise?

At 9:30am Eastern Time my Zune was still frozen because I put it to charge last night. I did not want to wait for the battery to drain so I folloed the instructions to open it up and unplug the battery. It was fairly easy to follow (but I have decent experience with things like that). Hooked it all back up, closed the case and my Zune30 is back up and running!!!!

working here…..just let your battery die….may take a few hours….then just plug it in…either to a usb port…or to your wall…the zune will take a little while to warm up….but will (or should) work fine!

Its a temporary fix but to solve the problem, pop off the piece of plastic at the charger. Use a small phillips screwdriver and remove both screws. using a very thin object (i use a razor blade) start popping off the cover from the bottom up. locate and unplug the battery, then plug back in. Snap cover back on. Replace screws and plastic charger cover. Power up and you should be good to go. I have done this 3 times already. Just waiting for a patch from zune. You can see how to do this on youtube by searching “changing a battery in a zune”. good luck all!
